Regularly scheduled meetings of the Board of Education are held the second Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. These meetings are held in the High School Library, 635 W Church Street (unless otherwise noted). All meetings are open to the public except the closed session portion of the meeting. The Board often meets more than once a month. The public is always notified of these meetings through public posting and the district website. Meeting agendas and supporting materials can be found by visiting BoardDocs.
There are five parts to School Board meetings: Public Forum, Consent Agenda, Action Items, Board/Administrative Reports, Discussion Items, and the Closed Session.
During the Public Forum, citizens are allowed up to four minutes to address the Board and share viewpoints on district or school-wide concerns. Citizens are asked to sign in on the “Public Comment” sign-up sheet prior to the board meeting.
For the Consent Agenda, the Board has been furnished with background material on each item or has discussed it at a previous meeting. Items are acted upon with one vote by the Board, without discussion. If a Board member wants to discuss any item, it will be pulled out of the consent agenda and voted on separately.
During the Action Items portion of the meeting, board members will take official action of items that may be required by policy, state statute, procedure, etc.
During the Board/Administrative Reports, the District Administrator gives an update, communications can be shared, Principals, Student Representatives, Directors, and any other reports are given.
In the Items for Discussion portion of the meeting, the Board is provided with information and given an opportunity to discuss items for the first time.
Some information the Board receives must be held as confidential information. Board business such as salary negotiations for employees must be considered over a period of time because of the very nature of the procedures. Items of this type are handled in Closed Session. The school district is governed under the open meeting law for closed session. Announcements must be made as to topics that will be discussed in the closed session.
