Although a failure at nearly all of his civilian endeavors, Ulysses S. Grant was the Union
army’s greatest general and led the Union to victory in the Civil War. President Abraham
Lincoln selected Grant as Union General March 9, 1864 after many unsuccessful
commanders. Abraham Lincoln said of him, “I can’t spare this man--he fights!”
